The Talhoffer Society Michael Edelson 9781522899051 Books
I am not involved in the HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) world at all, and would probably have never heard of this novel if not for a review by Samantha Swords that I stumbled upon (for which she has my thanks). I am, however, very glad I did. The Talhoffer Society is well written, thoughtful, and often a lot of fun. Mr. Edelson is a lover and practitioner of HEMA, and that very much shines through, but he's managed to strike exactly the right balance with the fight scenes. They are detailed and accurate enough to satisfy and appeal to the expert, but written in such a way that the lay person will have no trouble understanding what is happening. I love my spec-fic, and am probably more familiar with historical martial arts than most (I'm a military, social, and cultural historian), but I'm not a practitioner, and I had no problem whatsoever interpreting and visualizing the fights. The characters are compelling and interesting, but are in no way perfect, and the way they throw themselves into their passion to fill the holes in their lives and distract themselves from the pain is very real and will speak to anyone who has ever done the same. On that note, one of the main characters is a fighter with a serious disability, and Mr. Edelson handles that in a way that is sympathetic but does not detract from the condition's seriousness or the work that character has to put in to do what they do.
This book is being pushed as a novel for the HEMA crowd, but it has the potential to reach a much wider audience. Anyone with a fondness for/interest in one-on-one combat, elite secret societies, the similarities and differences between European and Asian historical martial arts, the mental side of martial arts, or warrior philosophy will enjoy this, and while it's set in our world and time, I would also recommend it to fans of science fiction and fantasy.
Also, as it contains extensive sword combat and large parts of it take place on a boat, it fulfills all the requirements to qualify as a swashbuckler, and the modern world needs more of those, especially thoughtful ones. I'd love to see another novel set in this world/society.

The Talhoffer Society Michael Edelson 9781522899051 Books Reviews
I stumbled upon this book while i was searching for historical european martial arts manuals, i recognized Michael Edelson's name from the HEMA community but didn't know he was a novelist as well.
The kindle book is quite affordable so i grabbed it, expecting probably just another dime-a-dozen so-so author but i was pleasantly surprised.
This was a really fun read that i've gone back to a second time and got me reading and enjoying all his other novels as well.
The story here can be enjoyed by anyone and Edelsons understanding of armed combat really shows as he easily and clearly describes all the action and fighting techniques so that anyone can understand what's happening. I was a total noob to martial arts when i first read it (kinda still am) and i followed everything without skipping a beat.
But for the modern martial artist this story can also work to help us remember and appreciate that what are now essentially sports, have a much more serious origin and purpose. What would you do if you were offered the chance to use your arts in a possibly to-the-death duel, not just self defense?
The epigraphs from a variety of the old martial artists are a nice touch as well. It's been a while since i read this but if i recall correctly, Von Danzig, Capoferro, Ringeck, Fabris and Musashi were quoted as well as a few others.
This isn't an action book though, far beyond the combat scenes is a great love story and conspiracy/mystery thriller.
One of the main strengths of all his books is the relatability of the main character(s). Whatever their station, be it fencing instructor, special forces operator, lonely weekend warrior in an isolated cabin, they all have a sense of wasted potential, a feeling that their life went wrong somewhere and they're waiting for something to happen(Whether they are consciously aware of it or not).
I think this resonates with almost everyone in some way or other, and reading about characters finding/stumbling upon that opportunity and taking hold of it can be quite gratifying for the reader.
Always a happy ending
